Richmond Home for the Elderly is a geriatric Home which offers free residential facility to senior citizens. It is owned and operated by the Government of Grenada under the auspices of the Ministry of Health. It is situated at Richmond Hill St.George, Grenada and is part of the Richmond Hill Institutions. The home is housed in a two storey concrete building which was originally built in 1829 and is situated next to Fort Frederick one of our historical sites in Grenada. It was said that the facility was part of the fort. There are still tunnels connecting the fort and a water well situated at the back of the building. The building was renovated in 1980’s and now can house approximately 80 residents. The roof of the building was destroyed by hurricane Ivan and was rebuilt by Craft Designs and Construction Co. Ltd and funded by various agencies. There is a basement in which the laundry department now occupies. The dietary department is in a separate building where the residents’ food is prepared and carried to the pantry in the main building. In the 1970’s the residents’ food was prepared in three copper pots and stirred with wooden spatulas and homemade tinning scoops to dip hot fluids. There is a building at the bottom of the compound called Hanson House which was used to nurse persons with leprosy.

The Residents

Presently there are 74 residents at the home. Thirty-seven females and thirty-seven male ages range from 28 years to 89 years. They comprised of geriatric, mentally and physically challenged, destitute and psycho geriatric residents. The female residents reside in the top storey while the male resides in bottom storey. The home is fully funded by the Government of Grenada and donations of foodstuffs, clothing and other items are frequently made to the home from time to time.

The Richmond Home is the only home on the island that is managed by a team of qualified caregivers. The Senior Nursing Officer is responsible for the smooth running of the home. The staff nurses, registered nurse midwives, registered nurses, nursing assistants and orderlies provide care to the residents. The housekeeping staff and grounds men keep the surroundings clean and safe. The security guards secure the compound and prevent the residents from leaving.

The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents are met. Their safety and security are of paramount importance to caregivers. The institution receives the service of one District Medical Officer and a pharmacist once weekly. Presently occupational therapy is not done due to the location of the department and the absence of an occupational health therapist. The residents attend beach picnics and funerals of other residents and loved ones. Every year the residents celebrate Fathers’ and Mothers’ Day and are treated with light refreshments sponsored by of the Orphans and Elderly. The competent ones attend and take part in activities such as Queen Show and Independent Day celebration at the Mt Gay Hospital. Christmas is also celebrated with the attendance of the police band; there is also a fashion show and refreshments are usually provided.
